Say Goodbye to Garbage Disposal Funky Smells

How to Clean Your Garbage Disposal with Lemon, Vinegar, and Ice

If you've noticed an unpleasant smell wafting from your kitchen sink, your garbage disposal may be the culprit. Food residue and grease can build up over time, creating odors that just won’t go away — no matter how many times you run the water. Thankfully, you don’t need harsh chemicals to fix the problem. All you need is lemon, vinegar, and ice cubes — three simple, natural ingredients that can leave your garbage disposal clean, fresh, and functioning smoothly.

Why This Method Works

  • Ice Cubes: Help dislodge stuck food particles and clean the blades.
  • Vinegar: A natural disinfectant that breaks down grime and neutralizes odors.
  • Lemon: Adds a fresh scent and the natural acidity helps with cleaning.

Step-by-Step: Clean Your Garbage Disposal Naturally

You’ll Need:

  • 1 cup of white vinegar
  • 1 lemon (cut into chunks)
  • 1–2 cups of ice cubes

Instructions:

  1. Toss in the Ice Cubes
Pour the ice cubes into the disposal. The rough edges of the ice help scrape off any buildup or food residue stuck to the blades and sides of the unit.
  2. Add the Lemon
Cut your lemon into chunks (remove seeds if possible) and add them on top of the ice. Lemon not only smells great but also helps cut through grease naturally.
  3. Pour in the Vinegar
Slowly pour one cup of vinegar over the ice and lemon. You’ll hear a little fizzing — that’s the vinegar reacting and doing its job.
  4. Run the Disposal
Turn on the cold water and run the disposal for about 30–60 seconds. You’ll hear the grinding of the ice and smell the lemony freshness almost immediately!
  5. Rinse
Let cold water run for a few more seconds after switching off the disposal to rinse everything through the pipes.

Bonus Tip:

Do this once a week to keep your kitchen smelling fresh and your garbage disposal running smoothly.

Client's Testimonial

If you are considering help with housekeeping you should definitely give Jana a call! We have been using her service for over 6 years. We have had the same team of 2 cleaners for close to 2 years now, which I think is very important. Jana is responsive to requests and goes out of her way to be flexible. Our cleaners are polite and work very, very hard; they take pride in their work.

I have very high standards for housekeeping and I'm rarely disappointed. Jana is a professional and puts a great deal of energy into training her employees. You won't be disappointed with the results!
